I found this forum while researching writing my victim impact statement. In May 2012 my parents former landlord broke into their house staged it to burn and waited. She shot my father in the back of the head as he entered the door. The bullet didn't penetrate his skull and he was able to fight back a survive, holding his attacker at the house until help arrived. We have already had the trial and she was found guilty on all charges. I just finished writing my impact statement for sentencing and will also be testifying at the hearing. In reading all of your stories I almost felt guilty, like I shouldn't be reading your words because my father survived. You people are all incredibly strong. You all work thru your fears and sadness, in doing so keep your loved ones memories alive. After getting a small taste of what you all have been through I don't think I would be able handle anything worse. Sitting in that courtroom for 8 days was the hardest thing I have ever done in my 40 years on this earth. I admire every one of you for standing up to the people that have hurt your families and moving on. This forum has helped me move past some of my fears and get done the things that will help keep my family safe. Thank you everyone who has contributed here.

Oh what a horrific thing for you and your father and whole family to have to go through. The trauma these vicious criminals cause is so hard to learn to live with. I'm glad your father did survive his attack, but I'm sure that you all had your own horribly difficult days while learning to live with the aftermath of this kind of violence too. And if this site that Char keeps here for us helped in any way, I am so glad. I hope and pray for you and your family's continued healing and recovery. I love hearing of someone that really does get to heal. Thank YOU for posting and letting us know. Janet

Dear Adam, sorry it took me a little bit of time to get to your post. I'm very sorry your parents had this happen to them. I hope your dad is doing well. Please don't feel guilty about your dad. I say accept the blessing that he lived and use it to inspire your life and others. Thanks for your kind words about the survivors here. Take care.

So I figured I better give an update. We had sentencing on Wed. 10/30. She got 100 years for trying to kill my father. She won't get her first parole hearing for about 23.5 years. So glad the system worked in this case. I truly wished it worked like that all of the time and for all of you good people.

What great news. Yes, it is always wonderful to get to see the system work like it should. This always makes me more hopeful for others too. Thank you for letting us know, Adam. If you do feel like sharing more about what has helped you to get past some of the fears after such trauma, I'm sure we can always use more ideas for that too.
I know I still battle some symptoms of PTSD at times too. I hope you feel a huge relief having this behind you, I know I did.
Thank you for sharing the good news, Janet
