I read this board on a regular basis and want to share a recent experience I had with all of you. As a survivor of homicide (my cousin brutally murdered and dismembered my aunt and uncle) and the author of the true crime memoir that tells the story of their murders and my story as a survivor, I was recently invited to be a presenter at the Melanie Rieger Conference Against Violence in CT. I gladly accepted the invitation, not really knowing what to expect. Over a two day period, I met and spoke with hundreds of survivors of homicide, among them Dr. Christine McFadden, whose four children were murdered by her ex-husband (recently on Oprah), Dorothy Moxley, Marc Klaas, John and Magi Bish, and the multitude of others whose cases are not high profile. It was an awesome experience - all different stories with a common thread - survival and the telling of those stories among people who understand what it means to lose someone to homicide. My message to all of you is simple: keep connecting with each other because in doing so you move from being victims to being survivors; every time you share you story and your feelings with another human being, you preserve the memory of your murdered loved ones. So keep it going.
Peace, Linda

Dear Linda, I enjoyed your post and hearing about the conference and everything. What's the title of your book? I'd like to look it up to see if I'd like to buy it. I'm also curious, how did you start your involvement in different activities for survivors? I think it's wonderful you're involved and doing things to help others. I agree, the contact we have with others helps us. We know we're not alone this way. I hope you're doing well, take care-Laura

Hi Laura - I am so sorry it tookme so long to respond, but I didn't know I had a reply. The title of my book is Surviving Murder: A True-Crime Memoir and it is available at Amazon, BN.COM and a lot of other online bookstores. Yes, I have gotten involved in various victims' things - at the moment, I am working on a handbook for survivors of homicide that I hope to turn into workshops. I think reaching out to others is important and there is so little of that, at least in my neck of the woods. Stay well and let me know how you like the book.
Peace Linda

Dear Linda, THANK YOU for your reply! I'm late in answering you and am sorry for that. My computer crashed a few weeks ago and I tried everything to get it fixed without taking it in for repair, but eventually had to. So far I haven't had problems again! I'll order your book and let you know what I think. I'm curious, how long did it take you to find an publisher, etc.? I've thought of writing about what's happened to my family, but am not sure if I have the discipline at this point for a whole book. I want to do a website, and it would help if I had more discipline in getting that ready! I'm very glad that you're involved in many things helping victims/survivors. That's wonderful. I hope you're doing well and I'll let you know what I think of your book. Take care-Laura
