Hi there. My name is Jennifer Shotz, and both Charlene Hall and Linda Purnhagen suggested I post a message here. I’m a graduate student in nonfiction creative writing at Columbia University and I’ve been working with Linda for over a year now on my master’s thesis. I’m writing about the murders of her daughters, Grace and Tiffany, and about the Purnhagen family’s experience after the murders.
Right now I’m posting to the board about a different project, but first I just want to say how moved I am by this site and by the care you demonstrate for each other here. I have read many of your personal websites and many of your postings to each other, and have been quite moved, over and over. This is a really wonderful place.
Please know that it is not my intention to intrude here, and I apologize if this request makes anyone uncomfortable in any way. I’m working on an article for a new national women’s magazine called “All You,” and I wonder if anyone here would consider participating or knows someone who would. We’re hoping to write profiles of three women whose sisters were murdered by their husbands. So much attention has been paid to cases like Laci Peterson’s, which is very important for her family, but there are many families who have lived through similar tragedies and not gotten a chance to tell their stories. The article will be a positive, respectful piece about what happened in each case and about the challenges the surviving sisters have faced and how they have dealt with their loss. It would be an opportunity for the women to talk about their sisters and to share their experiences with a pretty wide audience.
The magazine is being published by Time Inc, which publishes hundreds of magazines, including Time, People, Real Simple, InStyle, Sports Illustrated, Sunset, and Parenting, so it will be a very high-end, respectable publication.
Here’s the hitch: I need to find people who might be interested by this Thursday morning. I apologize for the short notice, but they just called me today. We wouldn’t need to do a full interview by then—if you or someone you know is interested, we would just need to speak for a few minutes on the phone.
I realize that it’s a lot to ask someone to share their story, and I would want anyone who chose to participate to feel completely comfortable with me and with the magazine. You wouldn’t need to commit 100 percent right away—we could just talk and see how you feel. Please feel free to email me at jshotz@earthlink.net and I’ll get right back to you. If you don’t feel that you are the right person for this article, perhaps you know someone who would be?
Thank you very much, and please take care,
Jennifer Shotz
