My father-in-law was murdered on aug.5 2003 by his wife which is my husbands step mother . She spent 5 days in jail then made bond and is out until trial .They are telling us that it will be at least another year before anything gets started . How long does it usually take for trials this is new to us. Another thing is we are having to take care of his bills because none of the insurance will turn loose until she is convicted. and that is really hard for us because we already had our own bills so now it is really tight. Whenn she call911 she told them she killed him so why is she not in jail until bond is it just the state of AL. or is all states like this please know how long it takes thanks

Dear JBox, I'm very sorry about your father-in-law. You may want to contact a criminal lawyer to find out the laws in your state. Also, if there's a victims' assistance office where you live they may be able to help or give advice. You may also want to check with Parents of Murdered Children for advice. They have a website that lists the meeting places in different cities. I'm glad you found this board and hope it helps you. Please let us know how the case is going. Take care-Laura

I am so sorry for your loss, and feel a mesure of your pain, and anger, as I share the same. I understand your frustration with the legal system. Al. seems to drag thier feet on convictions. My step-uncle murdered his mother his brother and my grandfather who had raised and supported him since he was about 6 yrs old. Three and a half years later he is STILL not convicted, and all of my grandfathers estate is held up by a lack of conviction. He confessed the next day, admitted it was done for drugs and money and he still walked away from a work release program for a week! The murders took place close to the weekend of the Talledega races, only about a mile or so from the race track, so they held off on prosecution untill it was all done, its been over three years, how much longer will they wait? I understand your frustration, and confusion about the hold up in justice. Why does it take so long? The olden days of when found guilty, they take them out on the court house lawn and be done with it should still be implimented, why must they be a debt to society? My only hope is that justice will be done, even if it is in their sweet time, it is also my hope for you. Know that you are not alone waiting for a conviction from the state of Alabama, I just live too far away to be a thorn in thier side, and no one will talk to me about why there is a holdup. The east coast is pretty far from OR. so I can do very little from here. If there is any way that I can help you, let me know. I will pray for you and yours, for a just resolution. Do not give up hope, dear one, there are those who share and feel your pain, I'm just glad you found this site to help grant you the support we all so very much need. May the sun brighten your days and the clouds blow away, the smile will eventually return to your face, just don't lose hope.

I, too, am so sorry about your father-in-law. My sister was murdered 9 months ago and her murdering boyfriends' trial has already been delayed once. My family is new to this as well and I don 't know the laws in Hawaii (or in any state for that matter) so I'm wondering, like you are, when things will start to roll! At least I know the SOB is rotting away in some jail. I feel really bad for you having to deal with the fact that the murderer is not in jail...how horrible!

My Dad was murdered on Nov. 28 2003, and the trial just concluded on June 30 of this year. I thought I would go out of my mind with the constant delays and rescheduling of the trial. I am so sorry that you are experiencing this too. In Florida, I was told that they have five years to bring the defendant to trial. I certainly hope that they won't take that long in your case.

Dear Dreamweaver, I'm very sorry about your family. If you don't mind my asking, what state did this happen in? I've never heard of anything like this, where a person doing this is just put on work release? How is this possible? I'm glad you found this board and hope you find some comfort here. Take care.

I FEEL SO SORRY FOR THE RELATIVES THAT HAVE TO GO THROUGH DELAY'S OF THE COURT SYSTEM. MY DAUGHTER CHELSEA WAS MURDERED BY A THREE STRIKE CRIMINAL. THIS MURDERING DIRT BAG WAS SENTENCED TO LIFE WITH NO PAROLE. I CANT GET OVER THE FACT THAT THIS GUY IS IN JAIL FOR HIS SECOND strike IN COLORADO PRIOR TO THOSE CRIMES HE COMMITTED ANOTHER FELONY IN W.A. ONLY FOR THE COURTS IN W.A. TO CONVICT HIM. THIS WOULD OF BEEN THIRD STRIKE AND HE WOULD NEVER SEEN THE LIGHT OF DAY. NOW THIS IS HOW WHACKED ARE COURTS ARE SINCE HE HAD PRIOR JAIL TERM IN COLORADO IT GAVE HIM A CHANCE TO APPEAL THE CRIME HE COMMITTED IN W.A. AND THE DIRTBAG ONE HIS APPEAL. I BELIEVE HE SPENT ANOTHER FOUR YEARS IN COLORADO THEN HE WAS RELEASED ONLY FOR HIM TO GO BACK TO WA. MY GOD THIS GUY KILLS MY DAUGHTER. WHAT THE HECK HAPPENED TO OUR LAWS I THOUGHT THREE STRIKES MEANS JUST THAT YOU DON'T EVER GET OUT OF JAIL. I NO I AM BLESSED THE DIRT BAG WANTED A SPEEDY TRIAL AND BOY HE GOT ONE ALRIGHT. CHELSEA WAS TAKEN TO GODS KINGDOM ON 11/2/05. NOW FOR THE DIRTBAG HE WAS TRIED AND CONVICTED IN MARCH OF 06' THE JURY TOOK TWO HOURS TO CONVICT HIM OF SECOND DEGREE MURDER AND MANSLAUGHTER ONCE AGAIN HE RECEIVED A LIFE SENTENCE WITH NO PAROLE THANK GOD. THE JURORS WERE ALL WOMEN.I CAN'T SAY ENOUGH OF HOW THEY HANDLED THE DELIBERATIONS. I CAN SAY THIS BUT FROM ALL INDICATIONS THEY HAD THERE MINDS MADE UP SOON AFTER THE TRIAL BEGAN. THIS GUY DID NOT EVEN DESERVE A TRIAL HE SHOULD OF BEEN IN JAIL FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE. ROY RUSSELL NOT ONLY WAS CONVICTED OF THREE STRIKES HE WAS CONVICTED FOUR STRIKES. ONCE AGAIN I COULD NOT IMAGINE GOING THROUGH A LONG TRIAL AND I FEEL YOUR HURT HAVE FAITH THAT GOD WILL PULL ALL POMC MEMBERS AS A FIGHTING FORCE AGAINST THE COURTS AND THE CRIMINALS AT TIMES, THEY SEEM' TO HAVE MORE RIGHTS THAN US AND THAT IS SAD chelly'sdadinOC P.S. THERE IS A BILL IN THE SENATE. SENATOR BENSON IS DOING EVERY THING HE CAN TO INSURE THIS NEVER HAPPENS AGAIN. MOST IMPORTANT IT IS CALLED THE CHELSEA HARRISON ACT. I WAS NEVER TOLD THIS FROM MY EVIL EX'S BUT IF IT GETS PASSED I WOULD BE SO PROUD OF MY LITTLE CHELLY, AND THEN EVEN MORE BITTER TOWARDS MY EX AND HER MOUTHPIECE ex-mnl...... FOR NEVER TELLING ME A WORD ABOUT IT.

Dear Chellysdad, I'm so sorry about what you've been through. This guy "fell through the cracks of the system" as so many do. It's an outrage. I'm very glad, though, he won't be getting out, as it sounds like he doesn't have a conscience. POMC is a wonderful group that's done a TON for MVS and will keep on doing. I was very blessed to have a meeting in the city where I lived in where the murders happened. You should have been told about this proposed law. It never ceases to amaze me how badly people treat each other in these ways. If you need any of us to sign anything about this bill to help it get passed and all, please let us know. Take care.
