Elsie Mae Deem died Jan. 30, 1984, three weeks after the 82-year-old woman was attacked and raped inside her home just south of downtown Fort Worth. But in 2008, former cold-case Detective Jose Hernandez reviewed the case and requested that several items be processed for DNA -- technology not available at the time of Deem's slaying. This March, Johnson said, cold-case Detective Manny Reyes received a report that a DNA profile had been obtained from the evidence. The profile was entered into the Combined DNA Index System, a database that compares convicted offenders' DNA with crime scene evidence. In July, Reyes received word that CODIS had returned a "hit" for Sanders. Investigators obtained another DNA sample from Sanders for additional testing. Detectives received confirmation of the match last month, Johnson said. That's incredible that this was finally solved after almost three decades. Big thanks to the detectives in this country who still care about cold cases.
