While this article probably won't make anyone feel any better about injustice, it is still ironically interesting . . . .
New Philadelphia newpaper 24 June 1825, pg 2
Trial for Murder
At the Court of Common Pleas convened last week for Coshocton county, Wm. Jones was arraigned for the murder of Connell O'Donnell, the circumstances of which have already been detailed in this paper. The grand jury readily found a bill for murder in the second degree. After the witnesses were examined, and a charge given from the court which tended to sustain the crime specified in the indictment, the jury, contrary to expectation, returned a verdict of manslaughter. It was proved in evidence, that after Mr. O'Donnell had been rescued from the hands of Jones, and was carried to his death bed, that Jones deliberately expressed his determination to wait until he should see if he would recover, for the purpose of more fully satiating his vengeance. For this act of human barbarity, Jones goes seven years to the penitentiary, while he who steals a horse is liable to be imprisoned fifteen.

We sure have a long way to go in totally revamping our criminal system, don't we???
One day heinous crimes will have just punishment and people will actually be held accountable for their crimes - instead of blaming their families, their job, their upbringing, etc.........
I just hope that day is before the end of it all!
